SUMMARY:Webinar: Trauma & Brain Science: Why Can't I Think My Way Out of This?

It will explain how those changes can result in negative impacts to our functioning\, thinking\, relationships and work if they are not addressed. We will learn why we can’t just decide to make the effects of trauma recede based on recent brain science. The workshop will address why we need to learn skills that actually address the changes in brain function during trauma to prevent negative effects. Skills for addressing trauma responses during traumatic experiences that are not dangerous and immediately post-trauma exposure will be presented. \nRegister \n**Please note\, class time is listed in Pacific Standard Time (PST)

SUMMARY:2019 Impact of Trauma on Law Enforcement Officers Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) is pleased to announce the 2019 Impact of Trauma on Law Enforcement Officers Conference at Christopher Newport University\, in Newport News\, Virginia on September 17-18\, 2019. \nLaw enforcement officers are often exposed to traumatic events\, and the cumulative effects of witnessing human suffering and tragedies. While law enforcement officers are trained to handle the most critical incidents like homicides and active shooter events\, the daily accumulation of stress\, anxiety\, and trauma are rarely addressed. Such exposure can weaken the mental well-being of officers and affect their ability to perform their duties to the public and live healthy lives outside of work. The potential long-term effects of trauma in police officers may additionally lead to behavioral dysfunction such as substance abuse\, aggression\, and suicide. \nTo assist in addressing these concerns\, the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services is pleased to offer this two-day conference on the impact of trauma in policing to provide information\, awareness\, resiliency tools\, and support.  The conference will include personal stories from officers involved in national tragedies\, like the Boston Marathon bombing\, the Sandy Hook shooting and officer involved shootings. \nDon’t miss this essential training opportunity for all sworn law enforcement officers. \nWho should attend?\nThis conference is open to sworn law enforcement officers only. \nTopics to be addressed\n\nOverview of Trauma in Law Enforcement Agencies\nPersonal Effects of Trauma on Law Enforcement Personnel\nTrauma’s Effect on Personal Relationships\nLaw Enforcement Encounters and Stress\nResiliency and Self-Care and Physical Fitness\nCritical Incident Stress Management Programs\nLessons in Resiliency and Recovery\nPolice Officer Suicide and Prevention\nAnd more!\n\nPartial In-service Credit\nLaw enforcement officers who complete this training are eligible to receive partial in-service credit hours.

SUMMARY:National Training Institute for FPPOA
DESCRIPTION:The FPPOA (Federal Probation & Pretrial Officers Association) national board has planning underway for the upcoming National Training Institute (NTI) scheduled for Sunday\, August 25th through Wednesday\, August 28th in Tucson\, Arizona.
