Facebook Live – Supporting the Mental Health of First Responders

January 10, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 10:30 am

Law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMT’s, victim advocates all embrace their responsibility “to preserve and protect” and take care of others … but how do we take care of them?

We will talk with Ronald Rufo, a 22-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department. Ron has a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership and is an author and professional consultant and speaker. His fourth and most recently published book, “Breaking the Barriers; Changing the Way We Support the Physical and Mental Health of Police Officers” discusses the importance of seeking mental health intervention before a minor problem becomes a major mental health crisis.

High rates of stress, anxiety, sleep disorders, divorce, and vicarious trauma have afflicted the law enforcement and victim serving professions for decades. Nationally, we are seeing law enforcement suicides increase. Ask anyone working in victim serving fields; police officers, firefighters, paramedics, victim advocates, and they will tell you “We’re living the dream,” but victim serving work takes an emotional toll, and problems can escalate because of the stigma around seeking help or admitting you have a problem you cannot solve by yourself.
